Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people see their reality in an abnormal way. Schizophrenia can cause a combination of hallucinations, delusions, and severe disturbances in thinking and behavior that affect daily functioning and can be disabling.
People with schizophrenia need lifelong treatment. Early treatment can help control symptoms before more serious complications develop and can improve long-term prognosis.

Diagnosis

Schizophrenia is characterized by thoughts or experiences that seem disconnected from reality, disorganized speech or behavior, and decreased participation in daily activities. Difficulties in concentration and memory may also happen.

Symptoms

  • Fantasies.
  • Hallucinations.
  • Disorganized thinking (speech).
  • Extremely disorganized or abnormal motor behavior.
  • Negative symptoms.
