Avoidant personality disorder is characterized by avoiding social situations or interactions that carry a risk of rejection, criticism, or humiliation. The diagnosis is made by clinical criteria. Treatment is with psychotherapy, anxiolytics and antidepressants.

Diagnosis

People with this disorder can be extremely shy, afraid of making a fool of themselves, and worry too much about not looking silly.

Symptoms

  • Psychological: depression or fear
  • Also common: social isolation or inferiority complex
