Smoking

Smoking

It is the addiction to tobacco caused, mainly, by one of its active components: nicotine. The action of this substance ends up conditioning the abuse of its consumption.

Diagnosis

Your doctor may ask you questions or quizzes to see how dependent you are on nicotine. Knowing how addicted you are will help your doctor determine the right treatment plan for you. The more cigarettes you smoke each day and the sooner you smoke after waking up, the more dependent you will be.

Symptoms

Nicotine use can have many different effects on the body. May:

  • Decrease appetite: the fear of gaining weight makes many people not want to quit smoking.
  • Boost mood, give people a sense of well-being, and perhaps even relieve minor depression.
  • Increase activity in the intestine.
  • Create more saliva and phlegm.
  • Increase your heart rate by about 10 to 20 beats per minute.
  • Increase blood pressure to 5 to 10 mm Hg.
  • Possibly cause sweating, nausea, and diarrhea.
  • Promote memory and wakefulness: People who use tobacco frequently depend on it to help them accomplish certain tasks and perform well.
