It is a state of mind in which people are overly dependent on others to meet their emotional and physical needs.
Diagnosis
Dependent personality disorder is diagnosed based on a psychological evaluation. The health care provider will take into account the length of time the person has experienced the symptoms and the severity of the symptoms.
Symptoms
- Symptoms of dependent personality disorder may include:
- avoid being alone
- Avoid personal liability
- Being easily hurt by criticism or disapproval
- Focusing too much on fears of being abandoned
- Become very passive in interpersonal relationships
- Feeling very upset or powerless when relationships end
- Having difficulty making decisions without the support of others
- Having trouble expressing disagreements with another
